Latvia Approves Tesla FSD (Supervised), Becoming the 10th EU Country

Tesla’s supervised driver-assist system keeps marching across Europe. On Monday, October 26, Latvia’s Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) recognized the provisional EU type approval issued by the Dutch vehicle authority RDW, making Latvia the 10th EU country to allow FSD (Supervised) on its roads. In Europe the system is now sold as Tesla Assisted Driving.

Tesla Europe confirmed the news on X (@teslaeurope): “Now approved in Latvia. Rollout begins soon.” Elon Musk followed up (@elonmusk): “Supervised FSD approved in Latvia!”

The Baltics are now three for three

With Latvia on board, all three Baltic states have cleared the system. Latvia joins the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, Czechia, Croatia and Slovakia, which we covered earlier this month. Tesla’s own FSD (Supervised) safety page now lists Latvia alongside Canada and the other approved markets.

What the regulator approved

  • CSDD classifies the system as a Level 2 driver-assistance feature. It can follow the navigation route, steer, brake, change lanes and handle intersections, but the driver stays fully responsible.
  • Before approving it, CSDD reviewed changes Tesla made: a lower allowed threshold for exceeding the speed limit, an automatic reset of any manual speed offset after each trip, and stronger driver monitoring.
  • The cabin camera checks that the driver is watching the road. Ignore repeated warnings and the system can be temporarily disabled.
  • According to Daily Baltic, it will only work on Teslas with fourth-generation hardware, and Tesla still has to activate it. EVwire reports it will cost 99 euros per month.

A winter warning that sounds very Canadian

One detail stood out for us here in Ontario. The Latvian regulator warned that snow, mud and road salt can interfere with the system, that it may not work fully on gravel roads, and that in those conditions it may unexpectedly hand control back to the driver. That is good advice for anyone using FSD (Supervised) on the 401 this winter: keep your cameras clean and stay ready to take over.

What’s next in Europe

Each national approval adds momentum toward an EU-wide decision, which needs a qualified majority of member states. EVwire notes the EU Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles’ December meeting is seen as the earliest likely chance for a vote.
