Tesla just made it a lot easier to use your car as a giant portable battery, but only south of the border for now. On Tuesday, October 27, @tesla_na posted that “Every new Tesla can now power your tools or gadgets via Powershare.” A follow-up post added the catch: it is “Available in US & Mexico with Mobile Connector and Outlet Adapter.”
How it works
Powershare is Tesla’s name for drawing power out of the car’s battery. On a Model 3 or Model Y, you plug a Gen 3 Mobile Connector into the charge port and add the Tesla Outlet Adapter, which turns the port into a 120 V outlet (up to 20 A), according to Tesla’s Powershare page. Tesla’s own examples include space heaters, e-bikes and power tools. Tesla’s support page says only the Gen 3 Mobile Connector supports Powershare.
Cybertruck already has built-in 120 V outlets in the cabin and bed, plus a 240 V outlet in the bed on AWD and Cyberbeast trims.
Which cars qualify
According to Tesla Support, every Cybertruck is Powershare-capable, along with all Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered in the U.S. and Puerto Rico after October 1, 2026. Some earlier Model 3 and Model Y cars are capable too. To check, make sure you are on firmware 2026.32.6 or later, tap the car icon, then Software, then Additional Vehicle Information, and look for “Powershare Support: Enabled.”
This builds on Powershare Home Backup with Powerwall, which Tesla said in early October can extend home backup by up to two days with a Model 3 or Model Y. TeslaNorth notes that the Outlet Adapter had already turned the Model Y Premium into a portable power station for U.S. buyers in August.
What about Canada?
Canada is not on the list, and Tesla has not said whether or when that will change. Drive Tesla Canada was quick to point it out. “*Except in Canada,” @DriveTeslaca replied, adding that “Canada is part of North America” and that not everyone will see the follow-up post.
That is a shame for Ontario owners. Think cottage weekends, ice-fishing huts, tailgates and power outages after an ice storm. Until Tesla confirms Canadian support, it is best not to assume a U.S. adapter will work here. We will update you as soon as Tesla says more.
