Tesla says its Cybercab is heading to Dallas next month and that unsupervised FSD could reach the first customer-owned cars around the second quarter of 2027, but only as part of Tesla’s Robotaxi network. The timelines came on Tesla’s Q3 2026 earnings call on Wednesday, October 21.
Cybercab: Dallas next month, sales by year-end
Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s vice president of AI, said Austin went first only because Tesla wanted to fill the city with Cybercabs. “There’s no fundamental reason that we are limited to Austin. In fact, next month we’ll be launching in Dallas,” he said, adding that the same software will scale to other cities alongside Model Y Robotaxis. @SawyerMerritt posted the news live.
Tesla began Cybercab rides in Austin on September 3, and its update deck says the Robotaxi service reached nearly two million cumulative unsupervised miles by the end of Q3. Texas has authorized 362 Model Y Robotaxis and 449 Cybercabs for driverless operation, CNBC reported, citing the state DMV.
Lars Moravy, vice president of vehicle engineering, said Tesla is “trying to get Cybercabs to customers by the end of this year, 2026,” though all units built in Texas so far go to Tesla’s own fleet. Musk added that “the vast majority” of Cybercabs will stay Tesla-owned as transport as a service. TechCrunch notes that federal regulators are still investigating whether the two-seater, which has no steering wheel, meets vehicle safety standards.
Unsupervised FSD for owners: around Q2 2027
Asked when unsupervised FSD will reach customer cars, Elluswamy said Cybercab and Model Y run the same software, which Tesla plans to release as part of FSD V15. Owners’ cars must also fit into Tesla’s geofences and fleet management. “We suspect somewhere around Q2 next year is when we can turn on some of the first customer vehicles to be part of the Robotaxi fleet,” he said.
Electrek points out the catch: as described, owners would join Tesla’s managed Robotaxi fleet inside existing service zones, not get a car that drives itself anywhere. Tesla runs Robotaxi in six U.S. cities today. Elluswamy said hours will soon run to 2 a.m., with 24/7 service, highways and more weather conditions targeted by the end of this year.
He also said Tesla is building its own AI-based maps and navigation, with parts arriving in V15.
What it means for Canadian owners
None of the unsupervised timelines on the call mentioned Canada, where FSD remains a supervised system that requires an attentive driver. Executives did not address the shareholder question on free HW3 upgrades, according to the published transcript.
