The Tesla Model Y was the most-rebated electric vehicle in Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta in the third quarter, according to new Transport Canada data on the federal EVAP program. Nationally, Model Y EVAP rebates more than tripled from Q2 to 3,336, second only to the Chevrolet Bolt, even as total rebate requests fell 14.3%.
Transport Canada’s September release of Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP) statistics lists every incentive request it received through September 30. We went through the open data file ourselves; our quarterly totals and model rankings match those reported by Electric Autonomy Canada and Drive Tesla Canada.
Q3 by the numbers
- Total requests: 34,486 worth $151.7 million, down from 40,239 in Q2
- Battery-electric vs. plug-in hybrid: 28,542 BEVs and 5,944 PHEVs
- By province: Quebec 18,115 (about 52.5%), Ontario 7,356, B.C. 6,022
- Top models nationally: Chevrolet Bolt 5,637, Tesla Model Y 3,336, Chevrolet Equinox EV 3,311, Ford Mustang Mach-E 2,942, Toyota bZ 2,574
Model Y EVAP rebates: up from 945 to 3,336
In Q2, Model Y requests totalled 945. In Q3 they reached 3,336, and 2,386 of those came in September alone, when only the Bolt (2,584) had more. Every Model Y request in the file is for a 2026 model year car, and nearly all were for the full $5,000.
Ontario buyers led the way. The Model Y had 1,260 Ontario requests in Q3, ahead of the Bolt (971) and Mach-E (659). It also topped B.C. with 1,485 and Alberta with 165. In Quebec, which has the most rebates by far, the Bolt and Equinox EV led and the Model Y had 347.
The Model 3 doesn’t appear at all. EVAP generally requires a final price of $50,000 or less, and imported models must come from a country with a free-trade agreement with Canada, so the China-built Model 3 doesn’t qualify. Tesla has also paused Model 3 Premium orders in Canada until March 2027, which leaves the Model Y as Tesla’s only rebate-eligible model here.
What’s next for the rebate
Transport Canada says $1.92 billion of EVAP’s $2.275 billion budget was left as of October 1. Under the program’s schedule, the maximum battery-electric incentive drops to $4,000 next year. One caveat: the data counts requests as dealers file them and can change as claims are processed. For the bigger sales picture, see our look at Canada’s August EV sales jump.
