Tesla has finally given its app a proper layout for bigger screens. A redesigned Tesla app is rolling out for iPad, Apple’s new iPhone Duo foldable, and Android tablets and foldables, with a two-column design instead of a stretched-out phone view. Tesla showed it off on X on Friday evening, October 23, with a simple line: “Tesla app now on the big screens.”
What’s new
Tesla UI engineer Alex Guichet announced the rollout on October 21. Based on Not a Tesla App and MacRumors, here is what changes:
- Two columns: the main menu (Controls, Climate, Location, Self-Driving, Summon, Charging, Schedules, Security & Drivers and Safety Score) sits on the left, with a large vehicle view on the right.
- Menus stay put: open Charging, for example, and its submenu stays on the left while the details fill the rest of the screen.
- A car view like the one in your car: the 3D model looks much like the parked view on your touchscreen, with frunk, trunk, charge port and lock buttons placed right on the car. Show PSI (tire pressure) moves under the car.
- Home energy: solar and Powerwall owners get a bigger view of power flowing between the panels, battery, home and grid.
Guichet said the team “rethought many screens” and will keep polishing the app. Not every panel uses the extra space yet.
Versions and devices
MacRumors ties the redesign to app version 4.62.0. Tesla followed with 4.62.3 on October 23, which adds fixes for iPad, iPhone Duo and foldables, and heise reports you need at least 4.62.3. On the iPhone Duo, the inner screen shows the new layout and the outer screen keeps the familiar phone view. Guichet said the update is rolling out on Android too, once the Play Store offers it to your device.
One security note: to send controls from an iPad, you pair it as a phone key. Guichet said Tesla is “not going to accept weaker security on iPad,” but you can turn off passive entry for that device in the Security menu, so an iPad left in the car won’t act as a key.
Is it available in Canada?
The app comes through the regular App Store and Google Play, and Tesla hasn’t said the redesign is limited to certain countries. Guichet warned it is a slow rollout that “may take an extra week or two” to reach everyone. If you don’t see it yet, update the app and check again in a few days.
And if you spotted a car called “[object Object]” in Tesla’s promo clip, a well-known coding placeholder that had developers laughing, Guichet replied that it is “obviously a joke name.”
